Coronavirus: all schools in the Dijon academy will close, lessons will be online

The worldwide coronavirus epidemic continues to spread.

According to the latest report released Thursday, March 12, 2020, in France, 61 people died and 2,876 were contaminated (nearly 600 more in 24 hours). In Burgundy-Franche-Comté, there are 219 people positive for covid-19 and five dead.

Faced with the accelerating spread of the virus, the President of the Republic announced a series of measures. This is how all kindergartens, all schools and universities will be closed from Monday March 16 “until further notice”. The closure will last at least 15 days, at least until the end of the spring break, said the Minister of Health on Europe on Friday. “Schools are not cheerfully closed” and the duration “will be as short as possible “, but” we want a massive national brake “on the epidemic, said Olivier Véran, insisting that the decision had been taken after a meeting with experts at the Elysée on Thursday.

The Dijon Academy, which brings together the four departments of Burgundy (Côte-d’Or, Nièvre, Saône-et-Loire, Yonne), had prepared for this announcement.
Result: four weeks of lessons are already online on the internet.

How does distance learning work?

These distance learning resources are offered as part of the educational continuity plan, says the Dijon Academy.

It is :

The Éclat-BFC (digital workspace): it provides access to digital education services and resources that enable distance learning. This tool, which is already in use, makes it possible to maintain the link between the student, the teacher and the class via email exchanges for example.

-The platform “My class at home” of CNED, the National Center for Distance Education: it offers online educational sessions and courses, in particular via videoconference courses.

Each parent of the student will receive today “by email” identifiers to connect to the “My class at home” platform, said Jean-Michel Blanquer on Friday, March 13. He promised support for those who do not have computer equipment, about 5% of students. “I don’t want any student to stay on the side of the road,” said the Minister of National Education. Note that thehe Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region will provide high school students who lack the necessary equipment (computers and tablets).

With this device, each student has their own account. It can connect to it from a connected computer, tablet or phone.

Before starting the sessions, the student takes a quiz to assess his level. If he is in kindergarten or primary, he must be accompanied by an adult. On the other hand, middle school and high school students are autonomous. The exercises are scheduled to be completed in one hour and can be printed, just like the lessons.
The lessons and exercises correspond to the elements of the program of the first and second trimester. If the epidemic were to last, the CNED assures that the courses of the third trimester would be accessible.

“The aim of this pedagogical continuity is to maintain the social bond that is experienced at school, to offer suitable learning content and situations and to support students in their activity at home,” adds the Dijon Academy.

Note that SNUipp-FSU, the first primary union, has already made its position known on this decision: the closure of schools due to the coronavirus is “a step in the right direction” says Francette Popineau, co-secretary of the SNUipp-FSU.

What will happen for the exams?

“The main scenario” is still to maintain the bac, said Jean-Michel Blanquer. “We really hope that in June the epidemic will be more behind us than before us.”

For competitions and other examinations, the decision whether or not to continue will be made “on a case-by-case basis,” he said.
In “a large number of cases, we must be able to organize them”, whether “remotely” or with respect for “hygiene rules”.

How to provide childcare?

In general, exceptional measures have been put in place so that parents can keep their children at home, in particular by means of a compensated work stoppage.

In addition, the Dijon Academy announced setting up a daycare service for the children of staff who are essential for managing the health crisis (nursing staff from hospitals and medical and medico-social services, public and private; police, gendarmerie and SDIS services). This reception will take place on Monday March 16, in principle at the usual place of schooling. Children will be welcomed in small groups of 8 to 10.

In the schools of Dijon, ten places will be ready to accommodate up to 500 children, from Monday March 16 from 7h to 19h. The spaces will be arranged to accommodate each 6 to 8 children. The school catering service of the city of Dijon will be reassigned to the preparation of meals for the children being looked after.

In Côte-d’Or, technical staff will continue to maintain the premises, while canteen agents will remain at their posts, at least next week, said the departmental council.

The rector of the Academy of Dijon recalls that schools will remain open to accommodate teachers. School heads will be present at their posts.
