Coronavirus: 70% of people over 18 received a first dose of vaccine

A symbolic milestone has been passed.

A Nationally, Belgium has passed the 70% mark of citizens over 18 who received a first dose of vaccine on Wednesday.

More than 6.4 million people have received at least one dose of the vaccine. Nearly four out of ten Belgians are also covered by a complete vaccination.

The latest covid figures

There are still 450 people hospitalized due to Covid-19, including 184 in intensive care, according to the Sciensano epidemiological bulletin published on Wednesday. During the week of June 16 to 22, 28.7 patients with the coronavirus were admitted on average each day to the hospital, a decrease of 36% compared to the previous week.

Between June 13 and June 19, 432.7 new cases were diagnosed on average per day, 44% less than the previous week. Since the start of the epidemic in Belgium, 1,080,035 cases have been detected.

The most significant development is observed in the province of Luxembourg, which had 25 new cases during the last week, against 81 the previous week, a decrease of 69%. The Brussels region and East Flanders have observed a 41% drop in contamination. The capital also has the most new cases in absolute value (508), followed by the province of Antwerp (494).

Over the same period, 6 deaths from the virus were recorded each day on average, a weekly decrease of 19%. At least 25,144 have succumbed to Sars-CoV-2 since its emergence in the country.

Nearly 38,600 tests on average were also performed daily, for a positivity rate of 1.5%. The latter amounts to 3.5% for the age group of 10-19 years, 2.2% for 0-9 years, 1.6% for 20-39 years, 1.3% for 40-64 years and only 0.8% for those over 65.

The incidence, which indicates the number of new cases per 100,000 inhabitants, reached 73.2 over 14 days. The virus’s reproduction rate remains at 0.75. When it is less than 1, this indicator means that the epidemic tends to slow down.
