At 9 o’clock Consultation committee, education remains a major point of discussion

Until late last night, the top ministers of the federal government have been meeting to prepare for this morning’s 9 a.m. early Consultation Committee. According to our information, education remains the main point of discussion: should (all) primary schools be closed for 10 days or not?

The Consultation Committee meets at the request of Flemish Prime Minister Jan Jambon (N-VA). He wants to temporarily ban large indoor events such as those in the Sportpaleis in Antwerp in order to put a stop to the rising corona figures. He opposes closing primary schools, although the experts have proposed exactly that because the infection rate there is very high.

Brussels is doing better, but “mainly show solidarity with each other”

How do they view the impending stricter measures in Brussels? Because there the corona situation is slightly better than in Flanders, for example. Elke Van den Brandt (Groen), minister in the Brussels government and in the Joint Community Commission responsible for Health and Welfare, wants to nuance this. “The situation is not good in Brussels either,” she emphasizes in “The morning” on Radio 1.

“If the Consultation Committee is convened, it is because the figures are alarming. We have to see how we best respond to them. The measures will also have an impact on Brussels. But our population does not necessarily stay within the borders of Brussels. not an island. Now we have to show solidarity with each other.”

“In Brussels, Flanders and Wallonia, an enormous amount has been asked of people, we must realize that,” says Van den Brandt. “But the reality is that care is being postponed. That has a huge impact on quality of life. We really have to provide answers to that.”

“Vaccines for children will also be available in late December or early January”

Should children between the ages of 5 and 11 also be vaccinated against corona? For that, we have to wait for the scientific advice of the Superior Health Council. That will come soon, thinks Jan De Maeseneer, professor emeritus of general practice at Ghent University and member of the vaccination task force. He assumes that the Supreme Health Council will give the green light, as the EU and the US are already doing.

“The good news is that vaccines will be available at the end of December or at the latest early January, because of course they have a slightly different composition than those for adults.”

930,000 children would thus be eligible for – initially – two injections. De Maeseneer thinks there are various options for organizing this. “The CLBs could do that, but they are currently very heavily burdened with managing the infections in schools. Of course we also have the vaccination centers that are running again at cruising speed everywhere. Mobile teams could also go to the schools.”

It is important, of course, that parental consent is given. De Maeseneer mainly asks for solidarity. “The chance in children is not so great that they will become seriously ill from the corona virus. So we mainly ask this to protect society, so that less virus circulates and weaker people have more opportunities.”

“Politics are victims of their own big statements”

Another Consultation Committee, the third in three weeks, with stricter measures: that does not provide a good picture of politics. “They are victims of their statements of the past weeks and months: we went back to great freedom”, analyzes Rik Van Cauwelaert, political analyst and columnist at De Tijd, in “The morning” on Radio 1. Partly surfed on the popular will, but especially on the small electoral interests of the coalition partners. Everyone had a chapel that had to be defended. That finally broke them up.”

It also disturbs Van Cauwelaert that “everyone makes statements without too much scientific knowledge”. “Everyone promises a lot and then has to come back to it. That applies to the Flemish, federal and Walloon governments.”

We’re a bit ‘compromised’

You see this yo-yo policy all over Europe, admits Van Cauwelaert. “But we have an additional problem: we are a bit ‘compromised’, as Jean-Luc Dehaene once called it. Try to implement an unambiguous policy with these coalition parties.”

First local transfer of omikron variant in Australia

In Australia, a first infection with the omikron variant of the coronavirus has been discovered in a student who has not traveled abroad. This indicates that the variant is beginning to spread among the Australian population.

The case, discovered in Sydney, the country’s largest city, comes despite a ban on non-citizens entering Australia and restrictions on flights from southern Africa, where the variant was first discovered in late November.

In the meantime, nine other infections with the omikron variant have been identified, all of them among overseas travelers. Australia has an estimated 2,000 new corona infections per day. However, with a vaccination rate of 87 percent in people over the age of 16, authorities are confident that the new variant will be effectively combated.

Five new omikron infections detected in New York

Five infections with the new omikron variant have been identified in the American state of New York. Governor Kathy Hochul announced this. “Let me be clear: this is not a cause for concern. We knew this variant was coming and we have the means to stop the spread,” Hochul said in a tweet.

The omirkron variant was identified for the first time in the US on Wednesday, a second and third case were added yesterday. With the five New York infections, this is eight infections in total. Every day, an average of 82,000 Americans contract a corona infection. That is a decrease compared to last week.
