About 9,000 urban workers in New York have been given unpaid leave for not following a corona vaccination order. The New York Mayor Bill de Blasio announced. The compulsory vaccination for employees of the city came into force on Monday.

About nine out of ten urban workers affected by the mandatory vaccination had complied with the obligation to be vaccinated by the start of the measure. According to de Blasios, there were no disruptions in processes due to a lack of vaccinations. In the metropolis of millions, around 300,000 people are in the service of the city.

The fire stations remained open, the municipal waste disposal companies implemented an additional collection on Sunday as a precaution to prevent garbage from piling up, as the mayor said. “I want to thank everyone who got vaccinated,” he said. “Thank you for doing the right thing. Thank you for moving us forward.”

There had been fierce opposition to the measure from a minority of workers, including in areas critical to public safety such as the police and fire services. The city’s largest police union has filed a legal appeal against the order.

Around 12,000 employees have registered a need for an exemption from the compulsory vaccination for religious or medical reasons. They are allowed to continue their work until the applications have been examined.
