Boris Johnson opens climate summit in apocalyptic terms | Abroad

According to the British Prime Minister, drastic steps must be taken during the 26th climate summit. They will not be the end of the problems, but the beginning of the end. We can take concrete steps “in coal, cars, money and trees.”

UN chief António Guterres said in his opening speech that urgent action must be taken “to save humanity.” The official opening ceremony also included the British Prince Charles, British biologist and television producer David Attenborough and various climate activists.

Some 120 heads of state and government gathered in Glasgow for two days to kick off the 13-day climate summit, including US President Joe Biden and German and Indian Prime Ministers Angela Merkel and Narendra Modi.

The summit should provide guidelines for achieving the targets set at the Paris climate summit in 2015. For example, the global temperature should only rise by 1.5 degrees, or in the extreme case less than 2 degrees. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions would make that goal achievable.
