Corona: School experts demand more flexibility from Rabe | NDR.de – Nachrichten – Hamburg

Status: 10.12.2020 8:08 a.m.

Today the ministers of education are talking about the possible consequences of increased corona numbers for schools. The education experts of the Hamburg citizenship parties are definitely calling for more freedom of choice for individual schools.

For 20 Hamburg schools severely affected by Corona, alternating lessons with divided classes are theoretically possible – according to a resolution by School Senator Ties Rabe (SPD). But in practice there are many open questions and problems. This has now been shown by a panel of experts made up of the parties ‘spokespersons on education policy with the teachers’ union GEW and parent representatives.

Legally difficult, technically too?

At many schools, video lessons for schoolchildren at home would no longer work if more than two classes were taking part, according to left school expert Sabine Boeddinghaus. There is a lack of internet bandwidth in many places. And Birgit Stöver from the CDU is calling for a change in the school law so that video transmissions are allowed at all. But some schools could already get started and gain experience.

The experts therefore agreed: the schools should be able to decide for themselves about the division of classes and alternating lessons – and not the school authorities.

163 schools currently affected

57 new corona infections were recently reported to Hamburg’s schools. 42 pupils and 15 employees at a total of 47 schools are affected, the school authorities announced on Wednesday. Compared to the previous week, the number of new infections has increased by a good third. A total of 384 people are currently registered with a corona infection in 163 schools, 307 of them schoolchildren and 77 school employees. With 256,000 students this corresponds to a share of 0.1 percent and with 34,400 school employees a share of 0.2 percent. There are currently 90 classes with almost 2,700 students and 222 school employees in preventive quarantine.
