Corona pandemic: incidence continues to fall – criticism of Spahn

As of: 25.05.2021 8:48 a.m.

The seven-day incidence has dropped to 58.4. There is criticism of Health Minister Spahn from the opposition. He had given a value of 20 as the new target for a “carefree summer”.

The nationwide seven-day incidence of corona infections has fallen to 58.4 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. New infections with the corona virus were reported nationwide in 1911, as reported by the Robert Koch Institute, citing the health authorities. 33 more deaths were reported within one day.

The seven-day incidence is currently falling steadily. However, the number on weekends or after public holidays is usually lower than the weekly average because fewer tests are carried out and fewer test results are transmitted.

Spahn wants to come under 20

In connection with the incidence number, there is criticism of Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn from the FDP and left-wing parliamentary groups. The CDU politician had named a corona incidence of below 20 as the target for a carefree summer.

“With his speculations, Mr. Spahn only spreads public uncertainty,” said Deputy FDP parliamentary group leader Michael Theurer of “Welt”. “The intensive care beds are emptying, the severe courses become significantly less frequent. The risk situation from a specific number, be it 20, 35, 50 or 100, is now completely different than it was at the beginning of the year.”

Left parliamentary group leader Amira Mohamed Ali said: “Concrete problem solving instead of gossiping announcements is urgently needed now.” She named ineffective test situations in schools, alternating classes and a lack of vaccines as problems.

Greens: Don’t just look at incidence

The Greens were more cautious. “Just looking at the incidence will not be enough in the next few weeks,” said parliamentary group leader Katrin Göring-Eckardt. “Even if a strategy of low infection rates is fundamentally correct.”

Spahn had told the “Bild am Sonntag” about the incidence number: “Last summer it was below 20. We should strive for that again. Caution and caution still apply.”

Spahn received support from Union faction vice-president Stephan Stracke (CSU). “With the goal of 20, we are particularly avoiding situations in which opening steps have to be taken back when the legal limit values are exceeded,” said Stracke to “Welt”. In no way should the Infection Protection Act with the limit values 100, 50 and 35 be changed, according to Stracke.

Criticism of Spahn came in connection with the vaccination campaign from the German Foundation for Patient Protection. Board member Eugen Brysch told the Düsseldorf “Rheinische Post” that Spahn speculated “unabashedly about vaccination plans for groups of people in the future and cannot meet current needs”.

It should not be “that patients with cancer, high blood pressure, asthma or diabetes still do not have a vaccination appointment,” he criticized. “With vaccines now scarce for those entitled to vaccination with priority two and three, despair grows”.

Understanding of “vaccination tourism”

Under such conditions it is predictable that people will do everything to get a vaccination. “Nobody should get upset about vaccination tourism, because those responsible for it are in Berlin and the state capitals,” emphasized Brysch.

The “arbitrary end of prioritization” on June 7th exacerbated the situation. Brysch called for the decision to be withdrawn. Only when 80 percent of those affected have been taken care of, the vaccine range should be allowed to expand.
