Corona outbreak in the Netherlands: 54 infected slaughterhouse employees live in Borken

After the Corona eruption in a Dutch slaughterhouse near the border with Germany, the number of infected people in the Borken district is increasing. A spokeswoman told SPIEGEL on request that 54 of the 147 employees of the Vion meat factory in Groenlo who tested positive currently live in the Borken district.

Most new cases are in the city of Gronau (20). “All employees who tested positive in the district of Borken and their surroundings have been placed in quarantine,” said the spokeswoman. The district health department is looking for other possible cases among the infected’s contact persons. The majority of the newly infected are workers from Poland and Romania, according to the spokeswoman.

Corona outbreaks have been reported in several German slaughterhouses in the past few weeks – including in the neighboring district of Coesfeld in Borken. Almost 300 employees of a Westfleisch factory were tested here.

Residents don’t have to worry about new restrictions

In the past few days, after the outbreak at the slaughterhouse in Groenlo became known, the Borken health department had carried out tests in the living quarters of slaughterhouse employees – and discovered 23 infections. A further 31 cases of people who currently live in the Borken district were added to the inspection of all employees of this meat factory ordered in the Netherlands. The health authority responsible for Groenlo informed the German colleagues early on when it became clear that many of the slaughterhouse employees lived in residential accommodation across the border.

Apparently, these people were also used in other plants. Extensive tests are now to be carried out in other slaughterhouses in the Netherlands.

The residents of the district of Borken do not have to fear any new quarantine measures or restrictions. If the number of infected does not increase significantly again, the circle will remain clearly below the threshold of 50 new infections per week and 100,000 inhabitants. From the beginning of the epidemic up to and including Monday, 1058 people in the district have tested positive, 38 of them have died. The new 31 cases are not yet included in the statistics.
