Corona indirectly worsens children’s health | NDR.de – news

Status: 14.12.2020 9:11 a.m.

Doctors in Lower Saxony have observed that the health of children has suffered greatly in the Corona year: More children are overweight, are increasingly sitting in front of screens and have fears.

“We see immense effects of the whole situation,” said Tanja Brunnert, spokeswoman for the professional association of paediatricians in Lower Saxony. Many of their colleagues also reported that there are significantly more young patients with emotional stress. In any case, socially disadvantaged children are particularly affected. For example, there are elementary school students who wet themselves again, said Brunnert. “They talk about how difficult it is to keep the distance in the school yard and that there is always ranting about it.” Many young people also have fears and sleep disorders.

More overweight, fewer language skills

The doctors also observed abnormalities during school entrance examinations in the Hanover region. Compared to the previous year, there are significantly more overweight girls and boys – their share rose from 5.4 to 7.8 percent. The proportion of those who are extremely overweight also rose from 4.1 to 5.6 percent. According to the evaluations, the language skills, knowledge of German and fine motor skills of five to six year olds have also deteriorated.

A quarter of preschoolers sadder

While before the corona pandemic, according to the report of the Hanover region, 4.7 percent of preschool children sat more than two hours a day in front of the television and other media, it was 7.1 percent after the school and daycare closings in spring. 12.5 percent even had their own television in their room, compared to 10.7 percent in the previous year. In addition, 80 percent of the parents surveyed said that their children suffered from not being able to meet their friends. Around a quarter of the parents reported that their children were more likely to be sad and show fears and worries.

Because the school entrance examinations were suspended nationwide at the beginning of the pandemic and they are not yet offered again in some municipalities, there are no figures from all of Lower Saxony. According to the state health office, medical officers are still needed in some municipalities in the fight against the infection process. According to the Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs, there are no reliable findings for Lower Saxony that the corona pandemic is increasingly causing language deficits among schoolchildren.
