Corona in Lower Saxony: State prepares vaccination centers | NDR.de – news

Status: December 6th, 2020 3:12 p.m.

The first corona vaccination centers are set up in Lower Saxony. Meanwhile, the state government is planning to gradually relax the current measures when the numbers have fallen accordingly.

In Hildesheim, for example, the gym of a school is being rebuilt and should be ready in a few days. According to the Ministry of Health, around 50 such vaccination centers are to be set up in the country to protect people in this country against the virus. The renovation requires a lot of organization and also the help of volunteers from fire departments and technical aid organizations. Citizens should later go through a so-called vaccination route, from registration to vaccination itself. The facilities should be ready for use nationwide by December 15th.

Loosen the partial lockdown in stages

On Friday, all districts and independent cities had an incidence below 200. The next day, Vice-Prime Minister and Minister of Economics Bernd Althusmann (CDU) spoke up and announced that the country would implement the current partial lockdown after the numbers had fallen with a step-by-step plan similar to wants to end last spring. “The way I envision it for the period up to March, we should allow easing step by step when the number of infections falls below a seven-day incidence of 35,” he told the German Press Agency.

The goal is to come under an incidence of 50 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants nationwide in seven days, but preferably well below 35. When this goal is reached, easing should be started quickly, for example for the catering and accommodation sectors.

Because: “Have the ambition to come under 100 all together”

Days before, Lower Saxony’s Prime Minister Stephan Weil (SPD) had spoken of a milestone in the fight against the spread of corona. Before the weekend, all counties and urban districts had an incidence below 200. “Now we have the ambition to get all together below 100 and then below 50,” said Weil, according to a statement from the State Chancellery. This goal can only be achieved together, which is why the SPD politician called on all citizens to continue to participate. After all, 13 of the total of 45 rural districts and cities are already under the incidence of 50 per 100,000 inhabitants in seven days. “That too is encouraging and should motivate us to hold back from visiting each other during Advent and Christmas, as difficult as it is,” said Weil.

Lockdown light extended until January 10th

This is one of the reasons why the federal and state governments have decided to extend the current corona restrictions until January 10th. In Lower Saxony, the mood fluctuates between approval and fear of the future. While the district assembly welcomed the decision as consistent and appropriate, tourism associations on the North Sea coast assumed that the economic situation for restaurants, hotels and service companies would continue to deteriorate. The working group of Lower Saxony cultural associations fears for the existence of free and private theaters, associations and self-employed individuals.

Easings planned for Christmas and New Year’s Eve

The stricter corona rules have been in effect since December 1st. For the period between Christmas and New Year, the new rules are to be relaxed a little: From December 23 to January 1, ten people from different households should be allowed to meet – children under 14 years are not included. In order to keep the transmission of corona infections as low as possible, the Christmas holidays already on December 19th. Originally, December 23rd was supposed to be the first day of vacation.

First vaccinations in December?

Meanwhile, the possible early approval of a corona vaccine ensures cautious optimism. According to the Corona crisis team, the first 100,000 people in Lower Saxony could possibly be vaccinated in December. In the meantime, a private test center for so-called rapid tests has opened in Hanover. The Lower Saxony Ministry of Social Affairs and the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KVN) are critical of the company. The market for rapid tests is still tense and private use could lead to the tests becoming scarce, according to the KVN. There are also two centers with the same offer in Osnabrück.

In times of crisis, solidarity and volunteering are needed

This year, Norddeutscher Rundfunk is fighting for disadvantaged people in the country during the Christmas season. With the charity campaign “Hand in Hand for Lower Saxony”, the NDR, in cooperation with the Diakonisches Werk and the Caritas associations, is calling for donations. The crisis isolates people from social participation and above all creates a need for discussion. Volunteer telephone chaplains have seen an increase in calls over the past few weeks. They estimate that three out of four conversations are about Corona.

Corona hotline in Lower Saxony occupied even longer

The country has set up a telephone hotline for questions about the corona virus: It is available Monday to Friday between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. on the number (0511) 120 60 00 The hotline is manned from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Citizens received general information there about the corona virus and its consequences, according to the Interior Ministry. Anyone who thinks they have been infected with the coronavirus should contact the on-call medical service on 116 117 or their family doctor. The doctor then clarifies over the phone whether the case is suspected and takes appropriate measures. If an infection is detected, the patient has to be quarantined at home. Contact persons of the sick person are also isolated at home for 14 days if they are in close contact. The most important protective measures remain: regularly Wash hands and do not cough or sneeze into your hand.
