Corona Diary, New York (6): In the past a masked man was a danger, now the unmasked jogger – culture

Klaus Brinkbäumer was most recently editor-in-chief of “Spiegel” and now works as an author for “Die Zeit”, among others. You can reach him at [email protected] or on Twitter at @Brinkbaeumer. In his weekly column “Spiegelstrich” he is currently writing a coronavirus diary with brief observations from everyday life and reflections on the crisis.

After the ban on masking, now the mask requirement. In the past, a masked man in Union Square could have been a danger, now it is the unmasked jogger who gasps and does not evade an inch. Afro-Americans tell the magazine “New York”: “We have learned that as soon as we wear a mask, the cops shoot us.” If the difficult perception does not deceive me, the general neglect continues: why shave, why put on make-up? And New York falls silent; who likes to talk with a mask?

– Most German people from politics and science communicate consistently and clearly compared to the White House. The fact that masks were initially declared useless and are now required is (was) dishonest on both sides of the Atlantic, as there is no new level of knowledge. We shouldn’t just buy these things away from the skilled workers.

– Catch-22: Epidemiologists such as Anthony Fauci and Christian Drosten have predicted that the success of measures can ensure that the sense of these measures is questioned. In the US, the campaign against collective protection from Covid-19 is orchestrated by a network of conservative billionaires like Robert Mercer who want to stifle government action and abolish taxes. This is how constructive democracy ends: via Twitter, the president supports those supposed freedom fighters who shout at democratic governors (and actually, officially, against his government); he lives from being venerated as the destroyer of the office he occupies himself. In Germany, most doubters are less destructive, but there are no intelligent reasons why the value of life should be so low.

– In the camp frenzy, somewhere on YouTube, I see a “goal of the month” from May 1972. My word of the month from April 2020 is “opening discussion orgies”. It helps Merkel’s opponents in their “dictatorship” scenarios when number one in the power structure appears arrogant. (PS: Manni Kaltz scored the goal from a distance, the nice game was slow, but took place.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZ3hsDBPdkc&t=94s

– That the US President is so stupid that he wants to cure Covid-19 through light and the injection of disinfectants is Thursday’s scandal. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33QdTOyXz3w

What I find sadder is the Friday when he said his remark was sarcasm. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bX8kEHTbug There are almost 50,000 corona deaths in the USA, and soon it will be more than in the Vietnam War (58,000). The President expresses no sympathy, does not allow flags to be hoisted at half mast, and considers sarcasm to be a form of dialogue appropriate to the situation.

– The US leads, even if it doesn’t lead. All countries watch out when the US withdraws funding from the World Health Organization: a guilty party hangs him higher! (The Washington Post reveals that many American employees in the WHO informed their government exactly in January.) International organizations cannot be stronger than their member states.

– “Control, concentration, precision, sometimes anger” were terms for his work for 20 years, writes C., a friend and surgeon on the Corona mission, “the fear is new. The racing heart. I hope in the locker room that there is nothing to do and that I am sent home. That never happens. ”He feels dizzy, the test is negative.
