Compared to the same month last year, the number of overnight stays in Vienna in April shrank by 98.2 percent to just 29,000.
The corona crisis hit Viennese tourism with harshness in April: The number of overnight stays fell by a full 98.2 percent compared to the same month in the previous year.

Only 29,000 overnight stays were counted in the accommodation establishments – almost half of them from Austria, as the Vienna Tourism Office announced on Wednesday.

Travel restrictions and the ban on the hotel industry brought minus
Due to the strict travel restrictions and the extensive ban on the hotel industry, there was a decrease of more than 99 percent from all main markets – Germany, USA, Italy, Great Britain, Spain, China, France, Russia and Switzerland. The number of overnight stays by Austrian guests fell by 95 percent. A total of 17,100 hotel beds were available in the federal capital in April, around three quarters less than in the previous year.

So far in the annual balance sheet Coronavirus pandemic not yet noticeable in this drastic way. Thanks to a strong start to the year, a total of 2,564,000 overnight stays were counted from January to April – a decrease of 46.8 percent. Up to and including March, the accommodation companies’ net sales fell to a good EUR 123 million, 26.5 percent more than in the same period last year. In March alone, the hotels earned almost 80 percent less. The figures for April are not yet available.
