Corona Containment Ordinance expires: This applies from February 1, 2023 in Hamburg

The infection situation has eased further in recent weeks, and the number of infections is declining. In addition, there is a very high vaccination rate in Hamburg and – also due to past infections – a high level of immune protection within the population. Against this background, Health Senator Melanie Schlotzhauer announced on January 13 that the measures would expire.

These measures are no longer applicable

The Corona Containment Ordinance had previously been extended again until January 31, 2023. Only a few measures and restrictions are regulated in it, which will expire at the end of the month:

  • From February 1, 2023, the obligation to wear a mask on public transport will no longer apply.
  • From February 1, 2023, the obligation to isolate yourself for five days in the event of an infection with the corona virus will also no longer apply.

Health Senator Melanie Schlotzhauer: “After almost three years of the pandemic, we are now in a new phase in which we are primarily relying on the personal responsibility of the people of Hamburg. This means that everyone can decide for themselves when it makes sense to wear a mask. In addition, the following applies not only to infections with the corona virus: If you are ill, stay at home.”

These rules continue to apply

However, other measures regulated by the Federal Infection Protection Act continue to apply:

  • In health care facilities (e.g. doctor’s surgeries), it is still mandatory for patients to wear an FFP2 mask. Visitors to facilities for vulnerable people (e.g. hospitals, nursing homes) must also wear an FFP2 mask.
  • A negative test is still required to visit care facilities and hospitals.

These regulations according to §28b paragraph 1 of the Infection Protection Act are limited until April 7th.

Health Senator Melanie Schlotzhauer: “Even if the infection process allows the Corona Containment Ordinance to expire – the corona virus has not disappeared. Vaccination remains the best protection against serious illness. Wearing a mask helps to significantly reduce the risk of infection in places where space is tight or where a large number of people come together. The authorities will continue to closely monitor the infection process so that they can react accordingly if the situation changes.”

The first “Ordinance to contain the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus in the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg” (Hmb. SARS-CoV-2-EindammungsVO for short) came into force on April 2, 2020. The legal basis was Section 28 of the Federal Infection Protection Act. Currently the 80th Hmb. Amendment ordinance of the Corona Containment Ordinance, which is the last one.
