Tattoo Inks Found to Contain Unlisted and Potentially Harmful Substances
Tattooing, an ancient art form practiced by humans for millennia, has seen a resurgence in popularity in recent years. With an estimated 32 percent of adults in the United States sporting at least one tattoo, concerns about the safety and composition of tattoo inks have come to the forefront. In a new study, researchers from Binghamton University have revealed alarming findings regarding the lack of precise blending and accurate labeling of tattoo inks in the United States.
Unlisted Substances Detected in Tattoo Inks
Chemistry researcher Kelli Moseman and her colleagues analyzed over 50 tattoo inks from nine different brands after discovering undisclosed substances in previously studied inks. Their study revealed that 45 out of the 54 inks analyzed contained unlisted pigments or additives. Additionally, some ink labels listed additives that were not present in the inks, raising concerns about the accuracy of product labeling in the tattoo industry.
Concerns for Allergic Reactions and Health Risks
The researchers’ findings spark concerns about potential health risks associated with tattoo inks. Allergic reactions and adverse effects, especially with red hues, have been reported months or even years after receiving a tattoo. Without accurate ingredient information listed on product labels, it becomes challenging for tattoo recipients and medical professionals to identify and prevent reactions.
Implications for Tattoo Ink Manufacturers and Artists
Only one brand’s labels were found to accurately list the ingredients in their ink, highlighting the need for improved labeling practices within the industry. The researchers urge manufacturers to reevaluate their processes to ensure transparency and to promote better quality control. Artists and clients are also encouraged to advocate for stricter labeling standards and manufacturing practices to prioritize consumer safety.
Global Concerns and Regulations
This study mirrors similar issues found in the European Union, where around 90 percent of tattoo inks were also mislabeled or contained unlisted additives. The European Chemicals Agency has implemented stricter regulations on hazardous chemicals in tattoo inks in an effort to safeguard public health. In the United States, the Food & Drug Administration has recently expanded its authority over cosmetic regulations, including tattoo inks, in an effort to enhance safety measures and better monitor adverse events.

While the regulations for tattoo inks are relatively new, these findings serve as an important baseline for future studies. Further research, product monitoring, and tighter regulations are essential to improve safety standards in the tattoo industry, safeguard the well-being of tattoo recipients, and minimize potential health risks associated with tattoo inks.
