Until now, the coronavirus seemed to mainly cause damage to the lungs, but the consequences could be more serious. This was evident when German physicians discovered damage to the heart muscle in a third of a random group of recovered corona patients. Of additional concern: the patients studied were relatively young and had usually left home.
‘This is what many were already afraid of,’ says professor of cardiology Jan Piek (Amsterdam UMC). “We focused on the lungs, but such a serious infection tends to affect more organs.
