Corning today revealed the latest iteration of Gorilla Glass, which claims to be tough enough to survive severe drops and resist scratches. Considering the ubiquity of Gorilla Glass, we’ll likely see a lot of new glasses in the near future.
The new Gorilla Glass, simply referred to as Victus rather than a number like its predecessors, can drop down to 2 meters (or around 6.5 feet) without damage. It’s apparently twice as strong as Gorilla Glass 6. It will also be much more resistant to scratches and impacts, while maintaining integrity even after being damaged. Corning has put together some pretty pictures, so if you want to see phones falling or glass shattered with something called Mega Slapper, here’s your spell:
We created the Slapper to test the falling glass performance of mobile devices. Where our Mini Slapper destroyed competitive aluminosilicate, even our Mega Slapper couldn’t beat Corning® Gorilla® Glass Victus ™.

To give you an idea of how important Victus is to us, Corning glass is used in several popular mobile device brands including Apple, Samsung, Sony, Huawei, Motorola, LG, and Asus. Victus Glass is very likely to be part of your next smart phone, be it iPhone or Android. It is also used in laptops and portable devices such as smart watches.

As to why there has been such an increase in resistance, Corning Senior Vice President John Bayne told Wired it was because we don’t upgrade as often: “ We believe people keep their phones for longer. “ Given that phones are now a long-term investment, it stands to reason that we want one that will last.
Of course, one can never be sure how the glass will hold until it is subjected to real breaking tests. You know the kind I mean, where you’re in a hurry and somehow manage to drop your phone so that it bounces up three flights of stairs and hits every step on the way down ( my college age self is blaming others in the crowded stairwell, thank you very much). Although I do not recommend trying to do that, it would at least be a good test of the actual resistance of Victus.
Corning said Victus will first be seen in new Samsung devices, likely Galaxy devices due to be revealed on August 5.
