London, Oct 19 (EFE) .- The COP26 climate summit, to be held next month in Glasgow (Scotland), is “the best hope” to act together in the face of the climate crisis, said the special US climate envoy. USA, John Kerry.

In a statement to the BBC released today, Kerry insisted that some countries carry out “dangerous” environmental policies and warned that it will be difficult to achieve the objectives to tackle the climate crisis if pollutant emissions are not reduced enough in the next nine years.

The COP26 summit aims to keep alive what was agreed in the Paris Agreement (2015), which seeks to keep the increase in the average global temperature below 2 degrees Celsius, and pursue efforts to limit the increase to 1.5 degrees.

“The truth is that emissions are on the rise around the world … and key countries are pursuing policies that are close to being very dangerous for everyone,” Kerry added.

In the past, the US envoy had called for China to increase the speed and depth of its efforts to cut carbon emissions.

“If you don’t reduce enough between 2020 and 2030, scientists tell us that we can’t get to where we need to go. We won’t be able to keep the Earth’s temperature rise to 1.5 degrees and we won’t be able to reach zero (emission). by 2050, “he added.

Kerry pointed out that the Glasgow summit – between October 31 and November 12 – is held at a time when scientists warn that there are nine years left to make the most important decisions in the face of the climate crisis.
