Cooking Oil is Rare in the Market, Ministry of Trade Reveals the culprit

KOMPAS.com – Supply cooking oil in the market is still rare until now. If anything, the price is still quite expensive compared to before the increase in early 2022.

The government has also been looking for a solution to overcome the scarcity of cooking oil supply in the market, but the various policies issued have not succeeded in changing the conditions.

Ministry of Commerce (Ministry of Trade) revealed that the lack of domestic cooking oil supply occurs in the field or at the level of product distribution to the retail market.

As reported KOMPAS.com On Tuesday (1/3/2022), the Secretary of the Directorate General of Domestic Trade at the Ministry of Trade, IG Ketut Astawa, said that crude palm oil (CPO) producers had complied with the Domestic Market Obligation (DMO) policy.

CPO producers have supplied as much as 351 million liters of cooking oil to meet domestic needs.

“From the existing data, the commitment of CPO producers has reached 351 million liters for 14 days. Our actual needs per month are between 279 and 300 million liters,” said Ketut.

Ketut explained that the supply of CPO that is met by producers for domestic needs should make cooking oil products flood the market within a month.

However, on the contrary, the availability of cooking oil products is still few or rare in the market, both modern and traditional markets.

Ketut added that the Minister of Trade (Mendag), Muhammad Lutfi along with his staff and the Food Task Force had gone to the field in the last few weeks to unravel the knot of problems that caused the supply of cooking oil to stagnate in the market.

Ketut admitted, the Food Task Force found elements who deliberately hoard cooking oil and do not distribute it to the market.

“Therefore, we (Ministry of Trade) and the ranks are also looking for the location of the node, including finding out if there is any hoarding,” said Ketut.

“Indeed, there are findings from the Food Task Force in North Sumatra, Kalimantan, and others. The district, city and provincial food task forces are currently conducting evaluation steps,” said Ketut.

Ketut also revealed that there are still people who buy cooking oil in more quantities than their usual needs, so the availability of cooking oil is running low.

“Because there is little information about the availability of oil, people are buying in droves. One family has already bought (cooking oil), bought it the next day, bought it in the afternoon, so the stock in modern retail immediately runs out,” he said.

Ketut said, all parties must provide socialization to the public so that there is no need to panic buying, so that the availability of cooking oil on the market can be fulfilled.
