NEW YORK – A Brooklyn man was sentenced to 30 years in prison after pleading guilty to multiple crimes related to a violent and unprovoked confrontation that culminated in the stabbing in the neck of a police officer and the shooting of two others in the 2020, prosecutors said.

Dzenan Camovic, 23, of Flatbush, was convicted Wednesday by Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Danny Chun after pleading guilty to three counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, two counts of criminal possession of a police officer. second-degree weapon and an accusation of reckless danger on March 16.

Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said on June 3, 2020, around 11:45 pm, NYPD officers Yayon Frantz Jean Pierre and Randy Ramnarine were on the corner of Flatbush and Church Avenue when Camovic approached Jean Pierre from behind and stabbed him in the neck.

According to Gonzalez, after stabbing Jean Pierre, Camovic attacked Ramnarine and threw the knife at him.

Jean Pierre managed to shoot Camovic despite being wounded himself. This led to a fight in which Camovic attempted to gain control of the officer’s gun. Eventually, Camovic managed to get hold of Jean Pierre’s gun and shot Ramnarine, wounding him in the hand. Other police officers responded at the scene and Camovic also opened fire on those officers, hitting one of those officers in the hand.

The three wounded officers were treated at a local hospital, as was Camovic, who also suffered several gunshot wounds during the violent incident.

“It is a miracle that none of these brave officers died when they were ambushed, stabbed and shot by this cheeky extremist,” González said in a press release. “We do not condone violence against our law enforcement colleagues and this long prison sentence makes him responsible for his vicious and inconceivable crimes.”
