Controversy Over Manipulated Photo of British Princess Catherine and Family Causes International News Agencies to Remove Image

NOS Nieuws•vandaag, 01:08

Several international photo news agencies have removed and withdrawn the photo of British Princess Catherine and her family published yesterday morning from their systems. The AP suspects that the photo has been tampered with, and other authoritative news agencies such as Reuters, AFP and Getty Images are also calling on their clients to remove the photo because it is not suitable for publication.

The news agencies received the photo through the British royal family and published it so that the news media could distribute it further. The photo was reportedly taken earlier this week by Prince William, Kate’s husband. She underwent abdominal surgery in January and had to recover for months, and has not been seen in public for weeks. It is unknown what exactly the intervention involved.

But the American news agency AP writes that it appears that the published photo has been manipulated by the source of the photo (the British royal family) “in a way that does not meet our standards”. The photo shows, among other things, that the sleeves of two children who are not sitting next to each other are mixed up.

Blurred hand

Also, the left sleeve of the sweater of Princess Charlotte, one of Catharine’s children, does not appear to align properly with her arm. AP says there is “an inconsistency in the alignment of Princess Charlotte’s left hand” in the photo.

The photo raises many questions on social media. Some users also point out that Kate’s wedding ring is missing, and others are surprised about the leaves on a tree that can also be seen in the photo. People will also notice that the princess’s right hand is very blurry in the photo, while the left hand is sharp.

Reuters news agency also deleted the photo from its systems. “Please delete this photo from your systems,” the news agency reported. And the French news agency AFP says the photo has been withdrawn “due to an editorial problem” and can no longer be used in any way. “Remove it from your sites and stop using it.”

Major photo news agencies prohibit the publication of highly edited photos. For example, the Reuters manual states that Photoshop should only be used in very limited ways, for example to crop photos.

The news editors of the AP news agency have asked the British court for a response, but the press department is not staffed at the weekend. There was also no response to a call back request.
