Controversial Statements by Rachel Zegler Spark Debate on Snow White Remake

Rachel Zegler’s statements about the new version of the classic have not been well received by everyone.

Not a real action ‘remake’ from Disney without its controversial turn. After the premiere of The Little Mermaid, the Mickey Mouse House will take Snow White to the billboards. Directed by Marc Webb and Rachel Zegler gives life to the leading princess while Gal Gadot gets into the skin of the Evil Queen. The company’s classic is from 1937 and, as Disney has been doing with the live-action versions of its animated films, the stories and characters are modernized. And the latter is not liked by everyone.

On TikTok and Twitter, some statements by Zegler have resurfaced in which the actress anticipated that the new Snow White will eliminate elements of the original story. In them she also criticized certain aspects of the classic and this has not been well received by all fans.

Until today I had not realized that ‘Snow White’ has one of the most tragic endings of Disney

In December, EW published an interview with the actress and Gadot. “I was scared of the original version. I think I watched it once and never did it again. I’m serious,” she said. “I saw her once and then I went to the attraction at Disney World, which is called Snow White’s Scary Adventures. It doesn’t sound good for a kid. I was terrified, I never went back to Snow White again. I first saw her at probably 16 or 17 years old when I was making this movie.”

In September, Zegler told Variety that “it’s not 1937 anymore” and Gadot added that the princess is not going to be “saved by the prince.”

As Zegler continued:

The prince will not save her and she will not dream of true love. She dreams of being the leader she knows she can be and the leader her dead father told her she could be if she were fearless, just, brave and true.

In another interview, in this case with Extra TV, Zegler said that the prince from the original film is a “stalker.” “The original came out in 1937 and it’s very obvious. There’s a lot of focus on her love story with a guy who literally stalks her. Weird! Weird! So we haven’t done that this time.”

“Criticizing Disney princesses is not feminist”

These words from Zegler have sparked a wave of criticism on TikTok. “Criticizing Disney princesses is not feminist,” says tiktoker @cosywithangie. “Not all women are leaders. Not all women want to be a leader. Not all women want or crave power and that’s okay.”

As he adds:

Thinking that a woman has less value because she falls in love or because she accepts someone’s help instead of being a boss with her problems is not feminist.

Other users have seen negative that Zegler criticized the original film. “If you hate the original so much, why do you want to do the ‘remake? Please make sense,” he @nuttybutter96 points out. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a condescending Disney princess in my life. It seems like women only matter if they hate love, hate any kind of romance, and only exist to be a leader.”

Besides these two, there are many more examples on TikTok. However, there are also users on Twitter who have defended the actress.

“Rachel Zegler’s hate is one of the stupidest things I’ve ever seen on this app. She made a comment about how Snow White has ambitions that have nothing to do with romance, and suddenly everyone decides that women being damsels in distress is feminist,” says @waitforme_II on Twitter.

Plans are for Snow White to be released in theaters in March 2024, but the actors’ strike could push that date back. At the moment, the only thing fans of the original film have are Zegler’s statements and an image from the shoot in which the actress can be seen wearing her iconic dress.
