Console Performance Closer to PC

Jakarta

Two of the newest consoles today, the PlayStation 5 (PS5) and Xbox Series X, have one thing in common. Namely, its performance is getting closer to a PC.

Admittedly, when there is a new console launch, there will be a lot of debate about the performance of the console compared to the PC’s ability to play games. Usually, in this comparison, the PC of that generation always wins far. At least that’s what happened when Sony released the PS4 in 2013.

But in 2020, when the PS5 and Xbox Series X were released, their performance was not much different from the PC. Even when compared to PCs in the same price class, the performance of the two consoles is even higher.

When the PS4 was released, many ridiculed the console because its performance was only equivalent to a (almost) low-end PC. The PS4 graphics chip was only equivalent to the Radeon HD 7850, at that time it cost USD 140, aka lower than the middle class components of its day.

This means that, at the same price, users can assemble a PC with higher computing capabilities than the PS4. But now with PS5, it feels difficult to assemble a PC with a price below Rp. 10 million that can play games with 4K resolution smoothly and frame rates that are not very low.

What is the difference between the current console and the previous generation consoles?

The main difference between the current consoles and the previous generation consoles is AMD, the maker of PC components whose chips are used by Sony and Microsoft on their consoles, as quoted from Wired, Monday (4/1/2021).

When PS4 and Xbox One were released, AMD’s condition was arguably not that great. Its components have less performance than components made by Intel, its rivals. Worse, the Jaguar AMD chip used in consoles is actually a slower version of the CPU for PC, whose performance isn’t that great either.

Meanwhile, when the PS5 and Xbox Series X were released, AMD’s performance was at its best. Their Ryzen processor line has high performance, higher than Intel’s line of processors. Likewise, AMD GPUs are relatively competitive with GPUs made by Nvidia.

Because of that, moment PS5 and Xbox Series X was released with a combination of CPU Zen 2 and GPU RDNA 2, the performance of these two consoles is also relatively competitive compared to existing PCs. Not only that, these two consoles also use very fast storage, equivalent or even faster than the one for today’s PC.

However, the debate between PCs and consoles does not seem fair to only talk about computing capabilities. The reason is that they are two different products, where PCs have various abilities that are not only for playing games.

While the console can only be used to play games (and some other entertainment activities such as watching videos). That’s why the user experience is optimized for that purpose.
