SHANGHAI, KOMPAS.TV – A Chinese fashion photographer has drawn an angry reaction from netizens because his photo is considered an insult.
Chen Man’s photo for fashion house Dior features a woman who for some Chinese netizens perpetuates Western stereotypes of Asian faces: small, slanted eyes with freckles.
Light skin and big eyes are considered ideal beauty features in China. Advertisers also generally use models that have that feature.

The photo by the 41-year-old female photographer was first displayed on November 12, but immediately drew anger from some netizens.
Editorial Beijing Daily even described the model in Chen’s photo as “gloomy-faced” and “cynical-eyed”.
“For years, Asian women have always been presented with small eyes and freckled faces according to a Western perspective,” the daily editorial said. “The photographer is toying with the (Dior) brand, or western aesthetic.”
Chinese netizens echoed this opinion, and Chen’s photos were seen as portraits of insults to what the West saw as the appearance of Chinese women.
“This is how Westerners perceive our appearance,” lamented one Weibo netizen. Other netizens even threatened to boycott the luxury fashion house.
