When Prince George (9) was baptized in 2013, one of the most iconic photos in recent times was also taken of the royal family.
In the picture from the christening day, Queen Elizabeth is pictured with her three heirs: then Prince Charles (74), Prince William (39) and Prince George. At the time, such a picture had not been taken for over a century.

The photographer who had the honor of taking the historic photo in 2013, Jason Bell, was still not entirely satisfied with the weather on the day of the christening. He therefore had to resort to some cheating, he says in the documentary “Portrait of the Queen”.

Bell admits that he cheated with the lighting, so that the image would match the mood of the day.
– A christening picture is a happy picture, and when I think of happy I think of summer, sun and light. So I wanted it to feel like a warm, sunny afternoon. The problem was that the photo was taken in October in London, and as someone who has lived in London myself, I know that you can’t trust the weather, says Bell.
He says that the solution was that he placed large lights outside the windows of the so-called Morning Room in Clarence House, the palace in London where King Charles and Queen Camilla (75) now live.
The spotlights gave the illusion that the picture was not taken on a gray October day at all – and gave the summer feeling that the photographer wanted.

Bell further says that there were a number of preparations that had to be made before the photo shoot.
– It is always important to examine the project and look at previous photos. Where does the queen go? Where does Prince George go? You think about the line of succession and want the picture to reflect it.
The photographer could also reveal that he was surprised by how seemingly normal the royal family seemed.
– The personal element is the same as it is in all other families, so it was interesting to see them being a family. I was quite drawn towards exactly that, he says.
