The German-Russian impostor Anna Sorokin has been convicted of theft in New York. A jury found the 28-year-old, who had acquired a false identity as a wealthy heir, guilty on all ten counts yesterday, according to prosecutor Cyrus Vance. The sentence is due to be announced on May 9th. The woman faces up to 15 years in prison.
Sorokin is said to have brought her sacrifices by a total of $ 275,000 (247,000 euros) to indulge in a luxurious lifestyle. According to the prosecution, through clever lies and a self-confident demeanor, she had managed to get tens of thousands of dollars in loans from various banks, travel for free in private planes, and live months in luxury hotels in Manhattan without paying the bills.
Attorney denied allegations
She also tried to set up a mix of nightclub and art gallery and borrowed $ 22 million – using forged documents. Prosecutor Catherine McCaw accused her during the trial of acting with “criminal intent”.
Sorokin’s attorney Todd Spodek denied the allegations. “She did nothing to separate the New Yorkers from their money – they gave it to her.”
Filming planned
Sorokin comes from a humble background. She is the daughter of a Russian truck driver. When she was 16 years old, the family moved to Germany. In 2016, Sorokin came to the USA and found his way into wealthy circles under the name Anna Delvey. The case caused quite a stir in the United States. The streaming service Netflix and the broadcaster HBO are already planning to film Sorokin’s story.
