Woman does not pay a mega amount of 364 euros with hand scanner at Jumbo

The shoplifter claimed the Leeuwarder Courant for 142.24 euros in products, good for 218 articles. The staff smelled danger, the woman had to empty her bags. When the products were scanned again by the store staff, there was an amount of 506.25 euros on the receipt. Theft of no less than 364 euros.

Regular customer

According to the Leeuwarder Courant, the woman was a regular customer of Jumbo on the Spoorstraat in Harlingen. She used to be a supermarket employee herself.

The 29-year-old woman has been banned from shopping for two years. According to the manager, a so-called challenge has recently been going on among young people in the Frisian city to steal as many cans and energy drinks as possible. “Since then we have been on top of it”, the manager tells the Frisian newspaper. The supermarket managed to expose the thief with cameras and undercover security guards.

RTL Nieuws approached the manager, but he did not want to speak to the media anymore. “He is tired of it and now wants to lie quietly on the couch,” says a supermarket employee.

Zelfscanner

Many supermarkets have self-scanners. Customers like to scan themselves because they don’t have to queue. In fact, a previous study by Deloitte shows that 10 percent of supermarket customers say they will switch if their supermarket abolishes self-scanning.

The benefit of self-scanning to the customer is primarily psychological, said sales director Martijn Termaten previously against RTL News. His company provides self-scanning equipment. “After all, you do not spend less, but more time. A cashier scans a product in 1.9 seconds, while a consumer takes 7.8 seconds.”
