On Sunday, June 28, at the age of 77, composer Pēteris Butāns passed away. Farewell to the Master will take place on Friday, July 3, at 14 in Ventspils Forest Cemetery Chapel, reports Latvian Radio 3.
“I stick to the position that you can’t just wait for inspiration all the time without doing it. You have to work hard. It’s no coincidence that the ninety-nine percent work and one percent talent is true. Life puts things together,” Peter said in an interview with the NRA. Bhutan, who believed less in fate, more in coincidence. And there was no shortage of curiosities in his creative biography.
His first diploma from Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music (JVLMA) states that he is a choir conductor, although he has never worked with a choir. When Kristiāns Lindbergs first took his trombone in his hand at the age of 17, Pēteris Butāns turned to the composition at the age of 44, obtaining a JVLMA diploma four years later – in 1990, so he once joked that he was a worthy copy of the Guinness Book of Records.
Pēteris Butāns gained more popularity in 1999, when his mass “Libera me, Domine” was premiered at the II International Sacred Music Festival. This was followed by the Choir Symphony, also premiered at the Sacred Music Festival. Then, as part of the new music festival “Arena”, his “Holiday Music” was performed. And then the bag was already open …
For the Choir Symphony, the composer has received the newspaper “Diena” Award of the Year in Culture (2003), for the composition “Lux aeterna” – the Grand Music Award (2004).
“Klasikas” creative team expresses its deepest condolences to the composer’s relatives, colleagues, friends and like-minded people.
