Communists want to go to the district assembly

Dhe district of Darmstadt-Dieburg has some special features to offer in the upcoming local elections. In contrast to the neighboring districts of Odenwald and Bergstrasse, the district elections in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district have not been combined with the local elections. The parties in the district assembly, including the Greens and the FDP, which work together with the SPD in a traffic light coalition, rejected the consolidation of the elections favored by the Social Democrats because it contradicted the formation of the democratic process of will to bundle elections. District Administrator Klaus-Peter Schellhaas (SPD) has to face the vote of the voters on May 30th.

There is still a direct election: In Roßdorf, one of the 23 municipalities in the district that stretches south around Darmstadt from the Hessian Ried to the Odenwald, a mayoral election is scheduled for March 14th. Christel Sprößler (SPD) is applying for a third term of office. A specialty in the district is the “red village”. What is meant is Ueberau, a district of Reinheim with 2300 inhabitants, in which the DKP has been the mayor for many years and was the strongest party with 39 percent of the votes in the previous local election. In relation to the whole of Reinheim, the DKP received eleven percent of the votes, which is the highest percentage in Hesse after the nearby Mörfelden-Walldorf. However, there is no class struggle in the contemplative Ueberau. The local communists are questioning capitalism and want to distribute the federal armaments expenditure among the municipalities, but are arguing in the village for more mundane things such as repairing local streets, more seating along the promenade and fairer wages for farmers. At the annual carnival parade in Ueberau, the DKP is represented with its own car and shows its ties to the people.
