Perspectives on the fragility of the world

One year after the start of the pandemic, what better approach than anthropology to tell the story of the fragility of the world, of human beings and of their society? Because anthropology is more than ever the writing of the common, tells Nastassja Martin at the opening of the new issue of the Review of crier, by its concern for language, attention to speech and the diversity of beings. In the quarterly of surveys on ideas and culture, it is also a question of poetry with the theorist of literature Yves Citton, of Beijing’s stranglehold on Chinese culture, of “Thinking about Brazil with Bruno Latour”, of the political abandonment of cartoonists even though the comic book sector is doing well or to question ecofeminism in the face of its commodification and political recovery. In short, there’s something for everyone. Even fans of David Graeber will find their account there through a posthumous and caustic text on the tie. The fans of Alain Badiou are also spoiled with an article signed by the philosopher Ivan Segré. Tempting, right?

At the roots of sexual violence

From ancient Rome to the very recent Swedish law on explicit consent, from the pedophile of clerics in 16th century Italy to marital rape in 17th century France: the latest issue of the journal Clio. Women, Gender, History is devoted to sexual violence. Even though historical research on rape dates back to the 1980s, the way in which historians today seize new objects of study is largely due to the “Renewed gaze” that we are now focusing on this violence: “The rise of the field of study [autour des violences faites aux enfants] is therefore contemporary with the major criminal cases that have followed one another since the 1990s ”, explain Sylvie Steinberg, Didier Lett, Fabrice Virgili and Camille Nous, who coordinate the file. Of even “the recent constitution of research groups on incest and harassment obeys the same desire to delve into history weighed down by contemporary questions but also the ambition to shed light on the present through the past”.

Clio. Women, Gender, History, issue 52 (2020) “Abuse. Force. Violate ”, responsible for the number Didier Lett, Sylvie Steinberg and Fabrice Virgili.
