Comment: Europe must impose more obligations on China

The EU wants to do business with Beijing. That must not lead to a sell-out of our values.


China
has moved. There is hardly a critic of the investment agreement with Beijing who questions this point. But there are only a few who trust, without skepticism, that the Middle Kingdom will implement its commitments, for example for the abolition of forced labor or the equal treatment of companies – in the way the European partners expect.

In fact, the now published text shows formulations that have yet to be filled with content. But can we build on the opening of a state power that promises liberalism but shows its dictatorial face in Hong Kong? It is these political objections that are raised against the treaty. Especially since there is not even a mechanism for settling disputes, as has long been the norm in other free trade agreements.

Above all, one sees the long road that the Chinese leadership has come since the negotiations began seven years ago and is satisfied with that for the time being. That is not enough. The EU Parliament will not ratify it without making improvements. And that’s good. Because China is not only allowed to invest in the Union, it must also accept the European rules.
