Comedian Kenny DeForest Memorial Fund Raises Almost $180,000 after Fatal Bicycle Accident

Almost $180,000 was raised in just a few days in memory of comedian Kenny DeForest, who died last week in an electric bicycle accident in Brooklyn (NYC).

DeForest, 37, was in a Citi Bike near the intersection of Rogers Avenue and Sterling Place on December 8, when for unknown reasons crashed into a parked car and fell to the ground, hitting his head. He was rushed to Kings County Hospital, where “underwent neurological surgery to remove a piece of skull to relieve pressure from a brain hemorrhage”reported The Guardian.

He died five days later, on December 13. A page on GoFundMe started by his friend and fellow comedian Ryan Beck to help Deforest’s family cover his medical bills raised $179,211 dollarsexceeding the initial goal of $150,000.

DeForest had appeared on “Late Night with Seth Meyers” NBC, “The Late Late Show with James Corden” de CBS and in the program “Crashing” HBO.

“Kenny DeForest was a universally beloved comedian who died tragically and too young. His relaxed and confident delivery always stood out. As can be seen in his late night debut on LNSM (Late Night with Seth Meyers, 2017), he was not afraid to tackle controversial topics (…) always in the service of an original angle and a great joke. It’s a shame we can’t see what he comes up with next.” he wrote that program as an obituary on social networks.

Traffic accidents are a great challenge in New York. This despite “Vision Zero” road safety plan created in 2014 by then-new Mayor Bill de Blasio, who promised to make the city safer for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists with a goal of zero deaths by 2024. According to the NYPD, cyclist deaths increased 260% in the first six months of 2023 and 325% since the implementation of the “Vision Zero” plan in 2014. In many cases the drivers flee.

The Governor Kathy Hochul signed last week the “Angelic Law”, intended to keep drivers with prior suspensions off the road by felony charging repeat offenders who operate vehicles without a valid license after committing five or more traffic violations that resulted in prior suspensions or revocations.
