Colombia exceeds 90,000 infections and 3,000 deaths from coronavirus


Barranquilla already accumulates 574 deaths and the rest of the municipalities of the Atlantic add 404, for a total of 978 deaths in that department, almost a third of those registered in all of Colombia.

Colombia exceeded 90,000 infections by coronavirus in a day in which it also had a record of 167 deaths, more than half of them in the Caribbean department of Atlántico, overwhelmed by the pandemic, reported this Sunday, June 28, the Ministry of Health.

With the 3,178 cases this Sunday, the country totaled 91,769 infected, of which 3,106 have died, which is equivalent to 3.38%.

Of the deaths reported this Sunday, 86 occurred in the Atlántico department, including 63 in Barranquilla, the capital, which, after Bogotá, is the city most punished by COVID-19 in the country.

Barranquilla already accumulates 574 deaths and the rest of the municipalities of the Atlantic add 404, for a total of 978 deaths in that department, almost a third of those registered in all of Colombia.

Deaths are also on the rise in Bogotá, which had 31 this Sunday, as well as in Bolívar, which added 22, of which 17 were in Cartagena de Indias, its capital.

The other deaths occurred in Valle del Cauca (8), Sucre (7), Magdalena (4), Chocó and Córdoba (3 in each), while in Cundinamarca, Cesar and Nariño there was one case.

The Atlantic leads new infections

Of the 3,178 new infections, most are also in the Atlantic, with 856, of which 526 correspond to Barranquilla.

Bogotá (810), Bolívar (232), Antioquia (218), Valle del Cauca (190), Nariño (144), Magdalena (128) and Sucre (115) followed.

In the total of confirmed cases, Bogotá is in first place, with 27,927, and behind are Atlántico (22,049), Valle del Cauca (9,468), Bolívar (8,792), Antioquia (4,089), Nariño (3,184), Cundinamarca (2,520), Amazonas (2,259), Magdalena (1,752), Chocó (1,421), Meta (1,220) and Sucre (1,092).

Given the seriousness of the situation in Barranquilla, whose intensive care units (ICU) cannot cope with the number of patients in the city and in other Atlantic municipalities, the authorities began to transfer some patients to Medellín, which has a higher capacity and much less infected.

According to the mayor of Medellín, Daniel Quintero Calle, that city has today occupied 21% of the ICU beds destined to attend the emergency by COVID-19, of which half are used by patients in the city, allowing them receive patients from the departments of Chocó and Atlántico.

“In addition to Chocó we have begun to receive patients from Barranquilla who also need our help at this time,” said the mayor on Twitter.

This Sunday there were also in Colombia 2,007 recovered with what are already 38,280 people who have overcome the disease (41.71%), while active cases are 50,228, representing 54.73% of those infected.
