İstanbul Küçükçekmece Lakein the morning of the previous day fish deaths happened. Mass fish deaths on the coastline on the Avcılar side of the lake disturbed the residents of the neighborhood. Some citizens shared their fish deaths on the lake by viewing them on their mobile phones. Upon the increase of fish deaths and incoming complaints, coastal cleaning teams affiliated to Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Marine Services Directorate were sent to the lake. The teams gathered dead fish by long-handled nets on the lake.

‘SAME EVENT EVERY YEAR IS LIVING’
Mutlu Yağcı, one of the residents of the neighborhood said, “I saw the same thing every year, as I have increased a little more this year. Waste animals may have been thrown away from the surrounding factories. This lake already smelled in the summer, the smell increased with deaths. ”
Another local resident, Şaban Üzümcü, said: “There was a strange smell, scum, and a change in the color of the lake in the past month. Fish deaths are now on top. An event every year is actually happening but much more this year. Unfortunately, after all, there is a water treatment facility in the future and the purified water enters our house. I think it may have been waste from surrounding factories, ”he said.

Dursun Yıldız, President of the Water Policy Association, said the following about fish deaths: “Fish deaths were seen in this lake last year. Waste mixed with the lake reduces the oxygen level in the water. Due to the long-standing wastewater, the lake water turned into a 4th class quality water. The lake’s threat to public health should be prevented. Fish deaths reveal that the level of pollution in water increases, oxygen level decreases. In this case, wastewater can be seen as the main reason for the deterioration of the ecological balance in the lake and the increase of pollution. However, the fact that this occurs in the summer shows that the temperature increase and the sun effect are also important. ”
