Employers: uncertainties on both sides

“The fourth round of negotiations was characterized by considerable uncertainty for both sides,” explained the managing director of the employers’ association, Wilfried Kley. He was negotiator for the employer side. “The trade unions fear that the inflation rate will rise as a result of the events in Ukraine – the employers cannot foresee when passenger numbers and income can be expected to rise again,” said Kley.

Ver.di: Not feasible at the moment

The spokesman for ver.di Nord, Frank Schichefsky, spoke of a compromise that was “not easy for either side”. Nevertheless, the union had wished for more accommodation from the employers. “But we assume that this is no longer feasible at the moment,” said the ver.di spokesman. The deal came about through a unanimous vote by the collective bargaining committee, “and that’s why we stand by the collective bargaining agreement.”

Union wanted 8.4 percent more money

The union had demanded an increase in wages and salaries by a total of 8.4 percent and a term of twelve months. The employers went into the fourth round of negotiations with the following offer: a total wage increase of 3.2 percent, a special corona bonus of 600 euros net, a tariff term of 24 months.

“Heavy Mortgage for Businesses”

Employer negotiator Kley praised “the mutual efforts to take the respective positions seriously in the negotiations”. However, the payment of the Corona special bonus and the increase in salaries are “a heavy burden for the companies”. According to Kley, this will only be manageable due to the long term of the new wage agreement of 30 months.
