Life has also returned at the Würzburger Reit- und Fahrsportverein on Mergentheimer Straße. Young riding school students get on their horses. The association has almost 300 members, more than half are children and young people. “It was and is a tough time for us. The horses had to be cared for and moved on,” says chairman Jochen Klingler and emphasizes: “We live from the income from the riding lessons. In the end, these were completely lost and could not be made up again Nevertheless, of course we are all happy that we can start again now. “
The professional riding instructor Lars Niebuhr welcomes three groups of four students every day for the gallop. A fourth unit will be added at the end of the week. “Because of the many editions, nothing else is possible,” explains Niebuhr. Teams of six are currently not possible, as are beginner courses. “You get too close there.” After every hour, he has to disinfect the reins and parts of the saddle, among other things, explains the riding instructor: “When alcohol meets leather, it is not good for the material.”
Tennis is again about game, set and victory – or just about the joy of sport .

This makes it easier for the tennis players. The yellow felt ball flies back and forth both at the TC Weiß-Blau Würzburg and on the layout of the TG Würzburg. Almost all places are occupied this afternoon. Most play singles, some also doubles. It is believed that this is allowed in training. At the TGW, whose tennis courts are a stone’s throw away, the youngsters are instructed by a trainer in small groups. The mood is good.
Another traditional sport on Mergentheimer Straße is rowing. There is not much going on at the boathouses and on the water. Not far from the new building of the Würzburger Ruderverein Bayern (WRVB), two young women venture onto the Main. They only started rowing in November. “Then came the winter and Corona. We must have forgotten everything now,” fear the two.
Her trainer Wolfgang Bogner ensures that they get back on their feet quickly. However, due to the hygiene requirements, he must not get on the boat with the two of them. Basically, only one is possible. But because the students live in a shared apartment, they can row together – mind you with a mouthguard. Bogner follows in on and the practice lesson can begin.
The golfers again pick up drivers, irons and putters, enjoy their sport in Würzburg and elsewhere.

The busiest thing this afternoon is on the heights. Golfing has been booming in Würzburg for some time. The approximately 950 members of the Golf Club Würzburg have longed for the resumption of their sport . Because golf is not a contact sport and you can keep enough distance outdoors, the understanding of the long break was very limited – especially since the weather was often blinding.
Now there is a real sense of optimism. Jörg Falckenberg dares to the square in colorful pants. The organizer of the Würzburg sports and media ball was one of the first in the region to cancel an event in early March. In the meantime, he considers many measures to be excessive. Now Falckenberg and the other members can return to the huge lawn – even in a group of four.
“You only have to pay attention to the distance. Otherwise you can play golf as normal,” says President Bernhard May. The staff did not sleep during the corona lockdown. The condition of the place is perfect. “Communication with the members has been very important to us in the past few weeks. That is why we reported extensively in a blog, for example about the work of the Greenkeeper,” emphasizes May. The traffic was overwhelming.
The open-air area at the Feggrube in the rear Sanderau is also open again. But you shouldn’t just enter it like that. Registration in the TGW office is required – especially so that there is no overcrowding. Their head, Raimund Schäfer, reports that the demand from the departments was initially somewhat subdued. But that is changing.

By the middle of the week, six TGW departments had already registered individual groups to train according to the requirements. A track and field athlete cannot be seen on the tartan track on Wednesday afternoon, but TGW basketball players do exercise on the hard court under the guidance of coach Janet Fowler-Michel.
“Our sports and fitness courses may start in a second step next week,” said Schäfer. Here you have to wait for the utilization of the outdoor area. Other clubs can also train there. There is currently a request from the triathletes of SV 05 Würzburg and a climbing section of the German Alpine Club.
Of the two municipal outdoor sports facilities, only the sweeping pit is open for the first week. On Monday the sand grass will also be added. It will be open on weekdays from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. The hygiene and clearance rules must of course also be observed there.
