“Climate-damaging decisions and forced labor accusations: Protesters interrupt Volkswagen’s AGM”

Jakarta

A number of activists staged a protest action during Volkswagen’s annual general meeting of shareholders (GMS) in Berlin, Germany, Wednesday (10/5/2023). Activists accused Volkswagen of using a forced labor system in Uyghur, China, and protested because the German manufacturer was still producing fossil-fuel cars.

About a dozen activists staged a protest, pressing themselves against the road to block traffic as Volkswagen’s annual AGM took place on Wednesday (10/5/2023). Activists accuse Volkswagen of making climate-damaging decisions.

As soon as the conference started, more protesters joined the streets, they shouted accusations of forced labor at the Volkswagen factory, Xianjiang, China. Activists also waved flags reading “End Uyghur Forced Labor”.

Demonstrators argue that Volkswagen, as one of the world’s largest automakers, makes most of its profits from vehicles that cause environmental damage. The company was also implicated in the Dieselgate scandal, in which emissions test fraud was found to have contributed to shortening the human lifespan globally.

The protest action was not over yet, the cake slid to the front of the podium when Hans Dieter Pötsch, chairman of the executive board of Porsche SE and the supervisory board of Volkswagen gave a speech. Hans Dieter Pötsch gracefully avoided the cake.

In another photo, the remains of a piece of cake stuck in front of the podium of the board member, Wolfgang Porsche.

At the AGM, the activists also asked for an end to forced labor at the Volkswagen factory, Xiangjiang. The message was conveyed through banners reading “VW = Forced Labor” and “End Uyghur Forced Labor”.

Outside, protesters demanded that Europe’s largest automaker reduce its carbon footprint.

“The science is clear: the emissions from Volkswagen’s car sales plan are beyond the planet,” is the message held by activists from Scientist Rebellion.

“Constructive dialogue is important. And the rally offers a great opportunity for this,” the company said in response to the protest.

Volkswagen has repeatedly denied that its factories use forced labour, but continues to receive a wave of criticism. This area of Xiangjiang is associated with human rights violations allegedly committed by the Chinese government against the Uyghur population.

Even Volkswagen’s corporate shareholders, such as Deka Investment and Union Investment, have asked VW to conduct independent external audits of its factories and suppliers to ensure that no parts are made by forced labor in the vehicles it sells.
