Climate Conference – Baerbock: “There is a world on the move”

A virtual UN climate summit is being held from New York today. The federal states should present their progress on climate protection and their further plans. The Greens chairman Baerbock called on Deutschlandfunk to finally implement the commitments.

Several heads of state and government take part. Chancellor Merkel is also involved. The originally planned climate conference was postponed to November 2021 due to the corona pandemic.

The video switch takes place five years after the Paris Agreement on Climate Change was signed instead of. According to experts, the commitments made since then are not sufficient for the goals they have set themselves – namely, limiting global warming to well below two degrees Celsius. The states should therefore adopt more stringent measures by the end of the year.

Baerbock (Greens): “We can get this under control”

The Green Chairwoman Baerbock said on Deutschlandfunk (audio link)That the signing was really historic at the time, even if there was no real political progress in the last five years. On the other hand, the “Fridays for Future” movement emerged during this time and many companies changed direction. Baerbock called for the Paris resolutions to be implemented at last. Politicians must set guard rails so that all areas such as agriculture, industry and transport become climate neutral. There is a lot of shadow because far too little has happened politically, but there is also a world on the move that shows: “We can get this under control.”

Yesterday the European Union committed itself to reducing its CO2 emissions by at least 55 percent by 2030 compared to 1990 levels. To date, the EU has had a value of minus 40 percent.

This message was broadcast on December 12th, 2020 on Deutschlandfunk.
