“The WHO could help us to reach this type of agreement with pharmaceutical companies, whose technologies could be adopted in Colombia, also to manufacture other types of vaccines, not only the covid-19“, López stressed in a press conference with the director general of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

López highlighted that among the pharmaceutical companies that could manufacture the anticovid doses in the Colombian capital are Sinovac (China), AstraZeneca (Sweden / United Kingdom), Gamaleya (Russian manufacturer of the Sputnik V vaccine), or Johnson & Johnson (United States).

Developing the vaccine in a year has been a miracle, but now we see that there is a lack of global production

“Developing the vaccine in a year has been a miracle, but now we see that there is a lack of global production,” said the mayor, who joined the calls of the WHO director general for a more equitable distribution of doses at the national level. worldwide and an increase in its production.

“In the long term, it is necessary to guarantee that different countries and cities have the necessary technology to produce vaccines, not only for covid, and for this technology transfer is needed,” he insisted.

López regretted that Bogota 20 years ago it closed its vaccine production infrastructure that it had until then due to insufficient investment, “a loss of knowledge that is having its effects.”

Now, however, “Bogotá is ready, we have the necessary scientific capacity and possibilities to forge alliances,” said the mayor.

López recalled that the same WHO wants him to be vaccinated in the next two months Latin America to all those over 60 years of age and to healthcare personnel, so this type of production agreement with pharmaceutical companies could be very useful at the regional level.
