Class action against Land Tirol: 400 Ischgl vacationers want compensation

At the beginning of March, the wet and happy ski party continued in Ischgl, Austria, although authorities had long known that the corona virus was rampant in the village. Hundreds of tourists who have become infected these days are now seeking a class action lawsuit.

Around 400 skiers could join a class action lawsuit against the Tyrolean authorities for a late reaction to the onset of the coronavirus epidemic. The Austrian Consumer Protection Association (VSV) announced on Friday that around 400 people, two hundred and fifty of them Germans, had registered just two days after a corresponding call. Most would have vacationed in Ischgl and in the Paznaun valley.

The association had previously filed a complaint against the Tyrolean governor Günther Platter, mayor, cable car companies and other officials. At the same time, he launched a Europe-wide call to potential victims who assume that they were infected with the corona virus during a skiing holiday in Tyrol.

The authorities in Tyrol are accused of reacted too late to the first signs of an outbreak in the popular winter sports resort of Ischgl and thus promoted the spread in Europe and beyond. The VSV stated that it wanted to collect testimony through its website. These should prove “that the closure of the ski resort was delayed for commercial reasons”.

According to information from the ZDF, a coronavirus infection had already become known in a restaurant in Ischgl at the end of February. However, the local operator did not report the positive case or its contact persons to the health authorities.

Instead, the restaurant remained open for two weeks and is now associated with hundreds of corona cases, especially in Germany and Austria, Denmark and Norway. Other revelers who got infected during their skiing holiday came from Canada, Great Britain, Iceland and Sweden. All of Tyrol has been under quarantine since March 18. On Friday, Austria had more than 7,000 infections and 58 deaths.
