Clash Between Striking Hotel Workers and Security Forces at Fairmont Miramar Hotel in Santa Monica

More than a month after the strike began, striking hotel workers and security forces clashed in Santa Monica.

A month ago, protesters gathered at the Viceroy Santa Monica and made their way to the Fairmont Miramar. Private security guards at the Fairmont Miramar Hotel drove picket workers to the ground. Phone footage shows Noel Rodriguez, an organizer, twisting his arm behind his back and being dragged.

“The hotel security attacked us. They attacked the workers; They attacked me and a few other people. And indeed it was the police who stepped in and made them stop and respect our right to go in and picket,” he later said.

What happened at the Fairmont Miramar Hotel?

Striking hotel workers held a rally on the hotel premises before moving their demonstration outside. Employees said the hotel tried to drown them out by playing loud music throughout the event, FOX 11 reported.

The strike by hotel workers in Los Angeles and Orange County began July 2 and continues to this day. Hospitality workers are on strike to improve their financial conditions. They are demanding higher wages and more generous health and pension packages.

UNITE HERE Local 11 is the union that speaks for over 15,000 people in Southern California’s hospitality industry. More than 60 hotels had their contracts ended this summer, including Marriott and Hilton.

Union tells Messi to stay away from the hotel

Lionel Messi and his Inter Miami colleagues wanted to stay at the hotel in Santa Monica during their trip to the game against LAFC. Now the protest group is asking Messi to avoid the Fairmont Miramar.

UNITE HERE Local 11 released a statement urging Messi and his Inter Miami side to support their cause.

“We learned that Inter Miami and the great Lionel Messi are coming to Los Angeles this week to play LAFC on Sunday. This morning, workers at 13 hotels, including the Fairmont Miramar, went on strike. Just two weeks ago, workers at the Fairmont Miramar called for a boycott of their hotel after hotel security officers were filmed violently attacking their own employees as they attempted to set up a picket line.

“As housekeepers, cooks, bellboys and waiters, we ask Lionel Messi and his teammates to show solidarity with us and stay away from the Fairmont Miramar.”
