City of Solingen Reacts to Latest Truck Accident at Keusenhof Farm: District Council Meeting Highlights Urgent Need for Action

The meeting of the district council (BV) Ohligs / Aufderhöhe / Merscheid on Monday should be interesting. After another truck accident in the Keusenhof farm, district mayor Gundhild Hübel (SPD) put the topic on the agenda and invited the “Wir im Keusenhof” association. The meeting will probably draw its excitement not so much from the residents’ contributions, but rather from the city of Solingen’s reaction to the latest events.

In any case, the administration would be well advised to also send a representative to the district council. After another truck driver from Romania “overlooked” all the warning and prohibition signs on Wednesday evening and caused extensive damage in the subsequent accident at the bottleneck in Keusenhof, time is of the essence. Something has to be done – the current situation cannot be tolerated by the residents for another day.

The city’s statement that it considers the existing signage to be sufficient is not enough. On Wednesday it was seen once again that this is by no means the case. All you can really do is grab your head when another truck driver who is unfamiliar with the area apparently believes that he can ignore warnings. And it seems incredible that there are still people who drive through half of Europe with an unsuitable navigation system and possibly without insurance. However, none of this helps if something happens – and in the worst case, residents are left with the damage.

It’s good that the BV is now pushing the envelope. The residents’ suggestion to build a mobile drive-through barrier probably makes the most sense. At the same time, it would also be desirable if the actual cause of the problem were finally taken more closely into account. This lies less with the drivers, who often work under terrible conditions, but with their employers. But you shouldn’t be naïve. This means we are moving at EU level, which does not suggest a quick social policy solution.
