The Academy of Oscars announced Friday to improve the presence of minorities among the nominees for its famous ceremony. However, she did not explain how she actually planned to go about it.
In recent years, the venerable Hollywood institution has already been criticized for the lack of diversity within it or among the Oscar-winning artists, particularly in the wake of the #MeToo movement or with the #OscarsSoWhite campaign (“Oscars so white”) ).
The Academy, made up mostly of older, white men, has already promised to increase the number of women and representatives of ethnic minorities among its members, who vote for the Oscars.
For films released in 2021
A new working group will be created to “develop and implement a new mode of representation and inclusion to be eligible for the Oscars,” the institution said in a statement.
Without specifying in detail what these measures would be, she “encourages” however “fair hiring and more representation (of minorities) on the screen and behind the camera”. These measures will not be applied from next year, but from 2022, for films released in 2021.
Another decided change, the “best film” category will now see 10 feature films compete for the most prestigious statuette of the ceremony, a larger number than at present.
