Chronology of Thousands of People Get Mysterious Flu in the US

Jakarta

The spike in influenza cases among students at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, United States, is currently the focus of expert investigation.

US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will research the case flu on campus with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and the Washtenaw County Department of Health.

“Partnering with the CDC will accelerate our understanding of how this flu season might develop regionally and nationally in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Lindsey Mortensen, medical director and acting executive director of University Health Services at the University of Michigan.

flu epidemic chronology

There have been 528 cases of influenza diagnosed by UHS since October 6, according to a university news release. More than three-quarters of these cases occur in people who have not been vaccinated against the flu.

The majority of cases occurred in the last two weeks. On Sunday, November 8, there were an additional 313 cases, while the previous week there were 198 cases.

Currently, as of October 6, there have been 1,038 people infected with influenza at the American university.

The study was conducted by the CDC as well as MDHHS which created Epidemiology Assistance (Epi-Aid) to investigate an urgent public health issue.

Investigation results

The investigation began this week and is being led by the Washtenaw County Department of Health, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and the university with a team from the CDC.

“Through rapid detection and collaboration with state and county health officials, as well as School of Public Health and Michigan Medicine researchers, we quickly identified this case as an influenza A (H3N2) virus infection,” Lindsey said.

The timing of the spike in cases comes as many UM students prepare to commute from campus to destinations around the country and the world as students return to their homes for the Thanksgiving holiday.
