In search of rare blood donors

Beyond O, A, B or AB blood groups, there are many more rare ones. A donation campaign is currently being organized and allows us to know if we are one of these donors.

O, A, B or AB we know all the main blood groups. We also know the concept of universal donor, (O-), but we often ignore that there are other much rarer groups. Consequence: there are also very few donors and this poses real problems for blood collection.

Without knowing it, nearly a million French people are carriers of these blood groups that are difficult to find. In order to find them and inform them of their particular blood profile, theFrench blood establishment a launched an awareness campaign that lasts until November 21.

Our blood presents a multitude of characteristics, we are talking about phenotypes which vary according to our geographical origins. The number of blood groups is estimated at 380 and among them 250 are classified as rare.

“One of the diseases difficult to treat is sickle cell anemia. This genetic disease affects children in particular and is revealed by sometimes intense pain. Today, only a regular compatible transfusion can save them” explains Doctor Brice Porea. There are 20,000 cases in France. The disease is characterized by a deformation of red blood cells.

Out of nearly a million rare blood carriers in France, only 10% are aware of their blood specificity.

Beyond this awareness campaign on rare bloods, the EFS Rhône Alpes also wishes to re-mobilize all donors. Blood stocks are down sharply. Nationally, 10,000 donations per day are needed, including 1,400 in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Two thresholds that have not been reached in recent weeks.

Samples by appointment take place in donation houses. The EFS also organizes mobile collections every day. You will be able to donate your blood but also to do the analyzes to know your blood type in a very detailed way. The health pass is not compulsory.
