Berlin – A sweet smell of baked apples in the nose, warm mulled wine in the hand: today the first Christmas markets open in Germany.

After two years of the corona pandemic, cities are expecting high visitor numbers. But the anticipation of the beautiful tradition is mute.

Reason: Due to high inflation and skyrocketing energy prices, the population has less and less money in their pockets and consumer behavior is subdued. In addition, the minimum wage has risen to 12 euros an hour and street vendors and entertainers are also grappling with rising electricity costs: there are fairy lights, a carousel and a stove for pot of mulled wine to the money incineration plant.

Consequence: Increased sales prices for customers!

Before Corona, the average price of a mulled wine in Germany was 3.50 euros, and in big cities visitors paid up to 4 euros.

BILD looked up German Christmas markets around and compared prices. By the way, it’s more expensive in Munich…

► Inside Berlin this year the average price of mulled wine in the Christmas markets around the city is 4.50 euros per glass. That’s 50 cents more than before. In the province of Brandenburg around the capital, you save on average about 50 cents, paying only 4 euros.

► Even inside Hamburg the price of mulled wine goes up by about 50 cents. A cup of mulled wine costs 4.50 euros at the “Weisserzauber” Christmas markets on Jungfernstieg and “Santa Pauli”. So still below the Munich price level. At the historic Roncalli Christmas market in front of the town hall, visitors pay “only” 4 euros for mulled wine, before the increase it was 3.50 euros. The reason is that only organic quality is served. Outside the city centre, mulled wine costs €3.50 from most operators. In order for families to also afford to visit the Christmas market, most stall owners have agreed that soft drinks will not be increased.

Bottom line: Stand operators have increased their prices moderately this year, often by only 50 cents. Most are happy to be able to open this year without major restrictions and are happy with every guest that comes.
