However, the choreographer said he understands that “society does not accept that he resorts to such means”.
“As someone who has never done anything like this myself, I am of course a bit shocked at myself,” said Goecke, who is also the permanent choreographer of the Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT) in The Hague. But his “person, work and company have also been smeared over the years”, he emphasized.
Last Saturday, in the foyer of the Staatstheater Hannover, the choreographer smeared critic Wiebke Hüster van Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
Goecke used a turd from his dachshund
Goecke had said before that she had written nasty and personal reviews about him. He is said to have used a turd from his dachshund on Saturday because of criticism of his production In the Dutch Mountains. It recently premiered in The Hague.
Hüster has filed a report. The police are investigating whether there is abuse and insult. The theater in Hanover has suspended him. He is also not allowed to enter the building of the opera house for the time being.
Whether Goecke will remain connected to Dutch dance theater is not clear. The NDT has not yet spoken to Goecke.
The NDT did say on Monday that it “deeply regrets” Goecke’s action. “Marco Goecke has violated the personal integrity of the person concerned. This action is contrary to our values that we use as a guideline in all our collaborations,” writes the management of the Dutch dance company.
The internationally acclaimed Goecke was awarded, among other things, the Jirí Kylián Ring.
