Beijing, China (CNN) — Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning said Thursday that China said it was ready to continue to play an active role in improving bilateral relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran.
“China is ready to continue playing an active role in mediation, support the two sides in increasing their relations, achieving good-neighborly friendship, and contributing Chinese wisdom and strength to the security, stability and development of the Middle East region,” the spokesman said at a press conference.
Mao added that “Saudi Arabia and Iran thanked China for its important role in promoting bilateral dialogues between the two countries,” and that they “expressed their desire to improve bilateral relations.”
It is noteworthy that the Saudi Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, met with his Iranian counterpart, Hussein Amir Abdollahian, in the Chinese capital, Beijing, on Thursday, in a meeting that is the highest-level bilateral meeting between officials from the two countries in more than seven years.
