China Threatens Britain over Hong Kong Citizens’ Moving Deals

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

China warn English that it will respond to the offer to transfer citizenship to citizens Hong Kong. This threat was given after Britain responded to the passage of national security law which was considered to threaten the freedom of Hong Kong citizens.

The Chinese Embassy in London stressed that all citizens living in Hong Kong are Chinese citizens. The embassy said that Hong Kong citizens were Chinese citizens too.

“If the British make a one-sided change to relevant practices, it will violate the position and agreement as well as international law and basic norms governing international relations,” the Chinese party wrote in a statement.

“We firmly oppose this and have the right to take appropriate action,” he continued.

Quoting AFP, China’s statement is an attempt to urge London to reassess the decision to offer citizenship status for Hong Kong citizens.

This Chinese statement also indicated that Britain “did not interfere in Hong Kong affairs in any way”.

Hong Kong came under British jurisdiction until it was handed over to China in 1997. The surrender was then carried out with the assurance that Beijing would maintain the city’s judicial and legislative autonomy for 50 years.

The British offer was given in response to the passage of national security law by China on Tuesday (30/6). Britain offers about three million Hong Kong citizens who have a BNO (British National Overseas) passport or are deemed eligible to apply for a citizenship transfer.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that China had violated Hong Kong’s autonomy since it was handed over by Britain in 1997. The National Security Law, he said, also poses a threat to the freedom of Hong Kong citizens.

The British Foreign Office said immigration would open up space for eligible Hong Kong residents to move into Britain without a minimum time limit of six months. In addition, they still have five years to become permanent residents to live and work in the UK.

British Foreign Minister Dominci Raab said, BNO passport holders and those who still have dependents in Hong Kong and want to come to the UK will still get limited leave for five years with the right to work or study.
