Children 5 to 11 Vaccinated Against COVID-19 for the First Time in Baja California – NBC 7 San Diego

TIJUANA- An emotional vaccination day took place this Monday in Tijuana and the rest of Baja California, where children’s tears, hugs and emotion were seen, as thousands of children finally arrived in line to be vaccinated against COVID-19.

This for the first time since the pandemic began, there children from the age of 5, were seen lining up with their parents from the early hours of this Monday.

“More than two hours, but finally, despite the sun, but finally,” said Alejandra Sánchez, the mother of two children, ages 10 and 6, who came to be immunized against COVID-19 in Tijuana.

The doses will be available in all municipalities this June 27

Words of encouragement, tears and the fear of some children about the vaccine were heard on the site, those who had to be hugged by their parents and even among nurses, moments of tension for many parents like Alejandro Estrada.

“Very difficult because they think that one is the bad guy in the movie, but in the end it is for something good for his life, I explained more or less about COVID and infections,” said Estrada, father of a six-year-old girl who was vaccinated in tears.

The doctors assured that one of the main reasons why the vaccination was in a pedestrian model in all the modules.

“The father is asked to come down and accompany the child, many times he has to take him in his arms to favor a safer application of the vaccine, so obviously it is a slightly slower process because it takes a little more care,” explained José. Abel Delgado, head of health jurisdiction number two.

This week 25,000 doses of the pharmaceutical company Pfizer arrived for this population of minors amid an increase in cases of COVID-19 in the state of up to 20%.

“Lately we have seen an increase in the number of cases of people of all ages and we do not have to lower our guard, we have to continue taking care of ourselves,” Delgado reported.

Therefore, the vaccination of each child was essential, after the first dose for this group this Monday, a second is expected in a maximum of 21 days.

“The school year is about to close and the growth of cases, especially in children, will probably be controlled a little more, but we will try to maintain the measures to encourage us to continue moving normally,” Delgado added.

And while the state hopes to reach 100% vaccination for minors, this Monday saw the arrival of children of all social classes and nationalities, some where the parents did not even speak Spanish, but all agreed that now they would take them more quiet to school.

“I feel very happy because my daughter already has more confidence to go to school or play with other children,” said Estrada.

And some like Alexandra, under 6 years old, said that despite the tears, they will now be able to play more calmly with their classmates.

“I always play with my classmates but each table is there, a table here, a table here, another table there so that we are not together,” said the six-year-old girl, during the vaccination.

The authorities of the health jurisdiction indicated that although more than 6,000 vaccines are expected to be applied to minors in Tijuana alone, they will continue with the program for at least the rest of the week until they reach 350,000 minors and thus more children can be protected. during an increase in registered cases in Baja California.
