Child Dies After Rejecting Merauke RSAL, Indonesian Navy Apologizes and Opens Investigation

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) apologized and admitted that he would investigate the refusal of pediatric patients by the Lantamal XI Navy Hospital (RSAL) Merauke, Papua.

“I investigated and traced this incident, whether there was negligence on the part of the Lantamal XI RSAL. If there is, I will process it according to the applicable law,” said Deputy Commander of Lantamal XI Merauke Marine Colonel (F) Hari Widjajanto in the statement.

Hari explained that the incident began when the Lantamal XI Hospital in Merauke arrived with a 10-year-old child with the initials AM.

It is said that the hospital does not have a pediatrician, so the hospital staff directs the patient to be brought to the hospital Merauke Hospital which is called having a pediatrician and more complete facilities.

Head of the Naval Information Service (Kadispenal) First Admiral Julius Widjojono emphasized that those found guilty in the investigation would be punished according to the provisions.

This incident surfaced after the family uploaded a chronology of AM’s rejection by RSAL Lantamal XI Merauke to Tiktok social media.

In yesterday’s press conference, Nursito explained that the pediatric patient was conscious and stable “and it was possible to be taken to Merauke Hospital because it was only 100 meters from the RSAL”.

The victim’s family returned to the Lantamal XI Hospital in Merauke, yesterday, asking for an explanation of the dark events they experienced. They were received by Nursito in his office.

After talking for about an hour, an agreement was obtained with the RSAL with the patient’s family that the medical officers who were on duty at the ER Rumkital Merauke would attend the code of ethics trial.

“We will take full responsibility and there will be a further investigation process and a code of ethics trial will be held for the medical officers on duty,” said Nursito.

Norbet Tebai as a representative of the patient’s family admitted that he had uploaded the video to his Tiktok account because he was annoyed with the services provided by the hospital.

“In this case, I will continue to oversee the trial of this code of ethics until it is finished. But if not, I will go viral again,” said Norbet.
